In a statement, Moore said: "I am in absolute shock. I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news."

The GI Jane actress said it was an "unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man's family and friends".

According to Los Angeles' county coroner Fred Corral, Valle had been missing for about 10 to 15 minutes before his friends found him in the pool. Emergency crews were called to the house in the Beverly Crest neighbourhood, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, reports the LA Times.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that it was "just a tragic accident".

Moore bought the house in 2003 with former husband Ashton Kutcher and kept it after they divorced in 2011.

Tallulah Belle Willis, 21, one of Moore's three daughters with her second husband Bruce Willis, had recently posted several photographs of pool parties on Instagram. However, police confirmed that none of Moore's family members were at home at the time of Valle's death.
