Bathily then made a daring bid for freedom, successfully escaping the scene to give police officers valuable aid in planning their rescue operation. For his bravery, he was awarded French citizenship.
Both men, as well as their friend Andrew Sadler and Brit Chris Norman, received the Legion d'honneur.
