Charity of the week: Building Goodness Foundation
Volunteers from across the construction industry design and build various structures for communities in need.
For 15 years, the Building Goodness Foundation (buildinggoodness.org) has brought together volunteers from across the construction industry to design and build various structures for communities in need. Using donations of time, money, materials, and expertise, BGF builds medical clinics, schools, community centers, and specialized housing for those who need them most. When Hurricane Katrina flooded the Gulf Coast in 2005, BGF erected sturdy wooden shelters for Mississippi families who had lost their homes. Many BGF projects involve repairs and upgrades, such as the renovation of a community center at the Mattaponi Reservation in Virginia. The foundation also works internationally. Soon after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, BGF built schools and clinics, and is currently expanding throughout Central America.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
