Noah: Watch the visually stunning new trailer for the biblical epic
Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky makes a bold gamble with this Russell Crowe-starring adaptation of the biblical story
When a Hollywood studio spends more than $100 million, it's often for a superhero blockbuster with a marquee name like Iron Man or Captain America. That makes Paramount's latest big-budget movie pretty far outside the norm: Noah, a massive adaptation of the biblical story centered on the man of the same name. This latest trailer for the movie shows that the studio has spared no expense in bringing the earth-shattering story to life.
Noah is directed by Black Swan's Darren Aronofsky, who seems to have faithfully translated the biblical narrative while fleshing out enough details to make it a feature-length movie. "Man corrupted this world and filled it with violence. So we must be destroyed," says Anthony Hopkins in the trailer. As Noah builds his Ark, he's beset by an angry mob led by Ray Winstone. "I have men at my back, and you stand alone and defy me?" asks Winstone. "I'm not alone," replies Crowe's Noah.
Noah is a fascinating project. It cost a reported $130 million to produce — a full $100 million more than Mel Gibson's similarly pitched The Passion of the Christ, which remains the highest-grossing Christian-themed movie of all time by a considerable margin. Based on this surprisingly action-packed trailer for Noah, it seems clear that the movie wants to appeal to fans of action-packed epics like Lord of the Rings as much as it wants to appeal to churchgoers. Will this unusual gamble pay off at the box office? We'll find out when Noah hits theaters on March 28.
