Charity of the week: Direct Relief
Direct Relief is providing medical support to Typhoon Haiyan's hard-to-reach survivors.
Direct Relief (directrelief.org) is one of many aid organizations stepping up to alleviate the enormous humanitarian disaster that Typhoon Haiyan has wrought in the Philippines. The organization is focusing on providing medical support to the storm’s hard-to-reach survivors. It immediately sent 10 tons of antibiotics, pain relievers, nutritional supplements, anti-fungal medications, wound dressings, and chronic-disease medicines. It intends to follow up that initial effort—35 pallets of supplies worth more than $2.5 million—with more of the same. Direct Relief is also outfitting trained physicians and emergency care providers with portable supplies of critically needed medicines, and is collaborating with several software firms to make sure its assets and personnel are targeted to the areas where they are most needed in the disaster’s aftermath.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
