Five states will begin a pilot program to test the impact of a longer school day next year. More than 20,000 students in 40 schools in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Tennessee will take part in the three-year program, funded by a combination of federal, state, local, and private dollars. The students will receive a total of 300 extra hours of classroom time over the school year. “When kids spend more time in school, they score better on standardized tests; they graduate at higher rates and are more likely to land internships or apprenticeships,” said Luis Ubiñas of the Ford Foundation, which is providing a $3 million grant.
