Charity of the week: Operation Support Our Troops–America

Operation Support Our Troops–America (osotamerica.org)offers soldiers comfort and moral support by providing care packages filled with items they may not readily get on deployment, as well as cards and notes of support from the community. Donors supply the items in 25-pound care packages that include batteries, playing cards, prepackaged snacks, and DVDs. Specialized packages include the “Baby Basket,” for the pregnant wives of deployed service members, and “Stockings for the Troops” at the holidays. The charity also runs outreach services such as “Leap of Faith,” a skydiving program intended to help bereaved family members of fallen soldiers deal with grief by moving forward with courage and trust.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
