Before Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes, his mentors at the Church of Scientology auditioned dozens of young actresses to serve as his next wife, says Vanity Fair. The British actress who was selected, Iranian-born Nazanin Boniadi, was already a Scientologist, and their arranged relationship got off to a promising start. But after Boniadi moved in with him, Cruise began to complain to Scientology about her shortcomings, and fired her as his girlfriend when she offended the organization’s leader, David Miscavige, during a social event. She was then ordered to scrub toilet bowls with a toothbrush. Scientology says disgruntled former members made up the story.
Hallucinating teen gets a dose of reality
A Florida teenager who was smoking a form of synthetic marijuana called 911 to complain that his parents didn’t believe his hallucinations were real. Police say Mark Welch, 18, told the emergency dispatcher that “everything that happened today is actually in my dream, and I want to prove it to everybody.” An officer determined that Welch was high, and warned him not to call again. When Welch redialed 911, police created a new reality for him by placing him under arrest.
