Charity of the week: School on Wheels
School on Wheels offers weekly, one-on-one tutoring sessions for homeless students across Southern California.
Homelessness often prevents children from getting the stability they need to succeed in school. School on Wheels (schoolonwheels.org) helps fill the gap, offering weekly, one-on-one tutoring sessions for homeless students across Southern California. The organization’s hundreds of volunteer tutors go directly to young people in need, who might be living in shelters, group foster homes, or on the street. The tutors provide help with homework as well as mentoring. Founded in 1993, School on Wheels currently aids 2,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, providing each one with a backpack full of school supplies. The organization’s BUS Program helps older students explore their post-graduation options, motivating them to pursue college, trade school, or a career.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
