Charity of the week: Feeding America
The organization’s 200 food banks provide sustenance to 37 million individuals each year.
Feeding America (feedingamerica.org) helps America’s hungry through a nationwide network of local food banks. The organization’s 200 food banks provide sustenance to 37 million individuals each year, including nearly 14 million children and 3 million seniors. It accomplishes its mission by gathering donations both from local sources and on a national scale. Its local food banks work with area manufacturers, farmers, and retailers to collect unused food items, while the national organization partners with major corporations, including Kraft and Nestlé, to facilitate large donations. One of the organization’s major programs is the Kid’s Café, which has more than 1,700 sites and provides free after-school meals and snacks to over 134,000 children each year.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
