Show of the week: The Closer
Kyra Sedgwick returns, for six final episodes, to her Golden Globe–winning role as brilliant but brittle L.A. police detective Brenda Leigh Johnson. Though the series has often blended character comedy with police drama, it returns on a dark note as Brenda re-encounters crafty lawyer Philip Stroh (Billy Burke), who’s representing an accused rapist—and may also be his partner in crime. Mary McDonnell co-stars as Brenda’s friendly enemy Capt. Sharon Raydor, who will get her own spin-off series following The Closer’s Aug. 13 series finale. Monday, July 9, at 9 p.m., TNT
