Charity of the week: ShelterBox USA
ShelterBox USA provides emergency shelter and survival equipment to victims of disasters around the world.
ShelterBox USA (shelterboxusa.org) provides emergency shelter and survival equipment to victims of disasters around the world. Each waterproof ShelterBox contains a tent for an extended family, blankets, water purification equipment, a multi-fuel stove, cooking pots, and a basic tool kit that includes a hammer, an ax, and a shovel. Response teams work closely with aid groups on the ground to distribute the boxes, which are tailored to local needs. ShelterBox was founded in the United Kingdom in 2000. Working with the U.S. office and more than a dozen other international affiliates, the global organization has provided more than 117,000 boxes on six continents. This year, ShelterBoxes have been sent, for instance, to victims of landslides in Peru, floods in Fiji, and an industrial accident in the Republic of Congo.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
