Show of the week: Smash
Smash chronicles the development of a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe.
This drama series chronicling the development of a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe has plenty going for it. Good songs, engaging characters, and well-mounted production numbers are just the beginning. Less like Glee and more like a vintage backstage musical, Smash isn’t afraid to get a little hokey, which is another strength. American Idol alumna Katharine McPhee has both the charm and the vocal chops to carry a prominent role, while Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Megan Hilty, and Anjelica Huston fill out an impressive ensemble cast. Monday, Feb. 6, at 10 p.m., NBC
