Where to buy...Elger Esser
Elger Esser's photographs of Egypt are on display and for sale at the Rose Gallery in Santa Monica.
The photos in Elger Esser’s latest exhibition capture an Egypt far removed from the past year’s tumult. For his newest series, the German artist traveled the Nile by boat from Luxor to Aswan, creating photographs that recall the landscape paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. In these tranquil scenes, clusters of ancient buildings or palm groves appear in the distance, unmoved by passing dramas. Horizons are low, and save for the occasional appearance of a fisherman or the passing of a traditional sailing vessel, human activity is absent. A narrow range of color blurs divisions between land, sky, and river, suggesting a sublime unity between natural and built environments. At Rose Gallery, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica, Calif., (310) 264-8440. Prices range from $8,200 to $60,000.
