Tip of the week: How to have a successful yard sale
Price wisely; Know what you’ve got; Expect hagglers
Price wisely. “Affordable pricing is the key to success.” Experts recommend that tag-sale items should be priced at about 20 percent of their original retail cost. Make your prices easily visible, and consider setting up a bargain table or two. A sign that says “Everything on This Table One Dollar” will attract “lots of customer attention.”
Know what you’ve got. Arrange sale items by category for easy viewing. Children’s clothes, toys, tools, bikes, and household appliances usually sell well; books and adult clothes, not so much.
Expect hagglers. Be prepared to negotiate, especially near closing time, when “experienced garage-sale buyers will show up” seeking bargains. Decide early which items you won’t sell at a discount. For the rest, it’s usually better to sell for half off what you’d wanted “than not to sell the item at all.”
