Show of the week: Citizen U.S.A.: A 50 State Road Trip

When her immigrant husband decided to become a U.S. citizen because he didn’t want to be “a foreigner in my own family,” filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi (Nancy Pelosi’s daughter) was inspired to visit all 50 states to document naturalization ceremonies. The director interviews many new citizens: refugees from Iraq, a Buddhist monk, a Muslim mom. Engaging and inspiring, her film is a timely Independence Day reminder of the unique privileges many Americans have come to take for granted, and of the enduring power of the American dream.
