Last year, this investigative news show won a Peabody Award for “The OxyContin Express,” its 2009 look at “the Colombia of prescription drugs”: South Florida. This week, the series opens its fifth season with “Gateway to Heroin,” a follow-up that details how the plague of illegal prescription drugs from Florida now rivals the crack epidemic in reach and impact. Correspondent Mariana van Zeller heads to Massachusetts, where addiction to prescription painkillers is driving young people to turn to heroin—a cheaper alternative that provides a similar high.
