Tip of the week: How to build a great campfire

Build a ‘cabin;’ Add tinder; Construct a ‘tepee;’ Light the tinder

Build a ‘cabin.’ Set down three logs side by side to form the base. Place two logs across the ends to create a second layer, then repeat to create up to five layers. Fill this “cabin” with kindling and tinder, and top with a layer of small sticks.

Add tinder. Add a second mound of tinder on top of the layer of sticks. If you have dryer lint, use that instead of dry grass or twigs. It’s “the best fire starter” there is.

Construct a ‘tepee.’ Create a “tepee” above and around the cabin by leaning a circle of tall sticks together. Leave an opening facing the prevailing breeze because “an impressive fire requires plenty of air to fuel the flames.”

Light the tinder. The flames will jump to the tepee, which will eventually collapse into the roaring fire.
