At least 14 countries have reported record high temperatures this year, which is on track to be the hottest year ever recorded throughout the world. In Iraq, where U.S. troops patrol in heavy armor, the temperature topped 126 degrees in July.

Harlem man survives 21 bullet wounds
A Harlem man who was wounded in a wild shootout with police last week may have set a record by surviving at least 21 bullet wounds. Angel Alvarez, 23, is recovering after doctors dug the slugs out of his body. “It’s a miracle,” said his lawyer. “They missed the heart and major arteries.”

Al Qaida’s new chief of global operations—a position once held by 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed—is Adnan Shukrijumah, 35, who grew up in New York and Florida, the son of an imam. Shukrijumah is accused of helping to cook up last year’s foiled plot to bomb New York City subways, and is believed to be using his knowledge of the U.S. to devise other attacks.
