Show of the week: By the People: The Election of Barack Obama

HBO's documentary provides revealing glimpses of Obama during setbacks and triumphs, along with equally telling looks at his staff and supporters.

This documentary was meant to be merely a profile of a promising young politician. Begun long before Barack Obama declared his presidential candidacy in 2007, it turns out to be an intimate look at a historic campaign that galvanized young volunteers and took advantage of new media. Directors Amy Rice and Alicia Sams provide revealing glimpses of Obama during setbacks and triumphs, along with equally telling looks at his staff and supporters, from strategist David Axelrod to a 9-year-old volunteer working the phones. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 9 p.m., HBO
