Jeffrey Skilling's appeal, Disney Stores' makeover
Good day for second chances, Bad day for thinking small
Good day for: Second chances, as the Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling's appeal of his 2006 conviction for securities fraud and other crimes associated with Enron’s 2001 collapse. Skilling is serving a 24-year sentence in a Colorado prison, but his lawyers say he deserves a new trial because the government didn't prove that he sought to benefit personally from his actions. (Los Angeles Times)
Bad day for: Thinking small, as the Walt Disney Company is giving high-tech makeovers to its 340 Disney Stores at a time when many other retailers are cutting back. Disney -- with design help from Steve Jobs and Apple -- plans to spend about $1 million per store to redecorate and install interactive technology, so children will be able to watch film clips and chat live with Disney Channel stars via satellite. The idea is to get customers to stay longer, and buy more. "The world does not need another place to sell Disney merchandise," said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. "This only works if it’s an experience." (The New York Times)
Monday: Good day for spiritual growth, Bad day for a reliable sidekick
