Oklahoma City’s rocking restaurant
VZD’s Restaurant & Club has been popular with the locals for more than 30 years.
VZD’s Restaurant & Club has been an Oklahoma City institution for more than 30 years, said Steffie Corcoran in Oklahoma Today. Its popularity rests on two claims to fame—“good food and rock ’n’ roll, with a side order of apothecary.”
Housed in a former Veazey Drugstore, which locals called VZD’s, the restaurant opened in 1976. Owner Chad Bleakley kept the vintage drug cases, filled with such old-time medicines as Corn-Off and Glessco for Adults. Live music is offered every Friday and Saturday night, with bands ranging from local groups to big names like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
At this popular neighborhood establishment, customers line up at the bar to place their orders, go off to find a table, and “fetch their food when their name is yelled out over a microphone.” Healthful options include grilled tuna salad and black bean burgers, but local favorites remain the grilled chicken sandwich, Caesar salad, beef burgers, and the Spinach Artichoke Dip, an appetizer that Bleakley insists he invented.
