Newport Beach, Calif.
There are still “some quaint and out-of the-way places,” even in Orange County, said Chris Erskine in the Los Angeles Times. Despite sharing a stretch of road with ice cream and bike-rental shops, this 11-room boutique Victorian hotel maintains an elegant, even romantic vibe. The furnishings, featuring lots of mirrors and saloon-worthy photos of nudes, could be called “early bordello.” But fireplaces, mantels, and armoires seem right out of Grandma’s attic, and the spacious sunken shower-tubs are “terrific.” A Continental breakfast is served on the communal patio.
