When a job makes you miserable, don’t let finances stop you from jumping ship, said Terri Cullen in The Wall Street Journal. “Just look before you leap.” Once you realize that your days are numbered, double your efforts to pay off debt and boost savings. Meanwhile, pinpoint exactly what is making you unhappy. “Most people stuck in miserable jobs don’t give enough thought to what they could do to improve the situation, other than leave the company.” Changing jobs within the same company, may help you maintian your pay scale while regaining your sanity.
Many people know they’re ready for a change but don’t know what sort, said Kerry Hannon in U.S. News & World Report. “A good place to start” is by considering what fields are currently hiring. Health care, for one, is a growing industry in which midcareer opportunities abound. The same is true of education, in which a shortage of teachers from preschool to 12th grade has opened doors. A new area in which jobs are opening up is elder care. An aging population is “driving up demand for nutritionists, physical therapists, speech and language specialists.” Just keep one thing in mind when considering jobs in these fields. “Patience and a sense of humor are prerequisites.”
