Terrorists end cease-fire.
The week's news at a glance.
Basque region, Spain
The Basque separatist group ETA called off its 15–month cease–fire this week, blaming Spain’s “fascist” government. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero “has turned toward fascism and left parties and citizens without rights,” the group said in a statement. “We will be active on all fronts to defend the Basque homeland.” Zapatero said he had considered the cease–fire to be over last December, when ETA bombed an airport garage, killing two people. That attack prompted the government to ban ETA’s political wing from running in local elections. The separatists have been fighting for nearly 40 years to establish an independent homeland for ethnic Basques.
