Ireland closed a bitter chapter from its past this week, when England’s national rugby team played at Croke Park, scene of the infamous “Bloody Sunday” massacre of Irish fans by English troops. In 1920, English soldiers drove a tank onto the field at a Dublin versus Tipperary soccer match and methodically killed 14 people, in retaliation for the assassination of 14 British intelligence officers on the orders of IRA leader Michael Collins. Since then, “Croker” has been a symbol of English perfidy. Yet this week, the arrival of the English team sparked only a small protest outside the stadium. Ireland trounced England, 43–13.
