Cuban President Fidel Castro is gravely ill with a severe intestinal infection, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported this week. Quoting unnamed diplomats and Cuban physicians, El Pais said Castro had developed peritonitis, an infected stomach lining, after three surgeries for diverticulitis, a bulging of the intestinal walls. During one operation, Castro’s bile duct was removed and replaced with a prosthesis, the paper reported, but Castro’s body rejected it. Castro’s surgeon insisted he is on the road to recovery.
