Is Osama dead?
The week's news at a glance.
Peshawar, Pakistan
A French intelligence report leaked to the press last week said Saudi authorities believe Osama bin Laden is dead. Bin Laden, the report stated, may have died last month of typhoid in Pakistan. French authorities said they could not confirm the report. Some analysts, meanwhile, said the leak could be a ploy to goad bin Laden into releasing a videotape of himself, which could then be analyzed for details of his whereabouts. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said he thinks bin Laden is in Afghanistan, while Afghan President Hamid Karzai suspects he’s hiding in Pakistan. The Taliban says that wherever he may be, he is alive.
