Teachers strike turns violent
The week's news at a glance.
Oaxaca, Mexico
Striking teachers this week took control of a dozen radio stations in the southern city of Oaxaca. The teachers, who have been on strike since May, are demanding higher pay and the resignation of the governor of Oaxaca state, Ulises Ruiz. Their protests turned violent when unidentified gunmen fired on a government radio station the teachers had seized earlier, wounding one striker. The teachers retaliated by burning buses, blocking roads, and commandeering several privately owned radio stations. The strikers broadcast warnings to parents to keep their children home when the school year starts next week.
