Baghdad
As his trial briefly resumed, Saddam Hussein had another courtroom tantrum this week, berating the judge as a lackey of foreign invaders. The deposed Iraqi despot complained that he was forced to climb four flights of stairs while shackled to “foreign guards,” presumably Americans. When the judge said he’d ask the guards to take off the cuffs in future, Saddam snapped: “You do not tell them. You order them. You are an Iraqi—they are conquerors and occupiers.” The courtroom observed a minute of silence for the two defense attorneys who were murdered during the trial’s five-week break, and then it adjourned to give the co-defendants more time to find a replacement lawyer. Saddam and seven others are on trial for crimes against humanity.
