Deadly liposuction
The week's news at a glance.
Abuja, Nigeria
Stella Obasanjo, the wife of Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, died this week of complications after plastic surgery. Obasanjo, 59, was recovering from liposuction at a clinic in Spain when she slipped into a coma and died. Nigerian commentators immediately raised questions of foul play. The first lady was a colorful and often controversial figure. Earlier this year she ordered the arrest of a newspaper publisher who had run the headline, “Greedy Stella.” The president had multiple wives before he came to power in 1999, but Stella was recognized as his “official” wife.
