Philippine police stormed a Manila prison and killed 22 inmates this week, quelling an uprising by Islamic militants. About a dozen members of Abu Sayyaf, a group linked to al Qaida, had led the revolt, killing three guards with a stolen gun. After a daylong standoff, police fired tear gas into the four-story prison, scaled the walls, and opened fire. Among the dead were three Abu Sayyaf leaders, including Alhamser Limbong, also known as “Kosovo,” the man who beheaded an American tourist in 2001. Abu Sayyaf vowed retaliation. “This operation, showered with the blood of our brothers, will become like vitamins to us,” said spokesman Abu Solaiman.
