Candidate sterilized women

The U.S. Senate race in Oklahoma was shaken last week by the revelation that Republican candidate Tom Coburn, an obstetrician, had been sued in 1991 for sterilizing an underage woman without her consent. Coburn acknowledged performing the procedure, but said the woman had agreed to it, and pointed out that the suit was eventually dropped. “I’ve done this to lots of women who have come in with emergency things, who have asked me to sterilize them, underage, when they’ve already had three babies,” said Coburn. Coburn’s substantial lead in the polls has evaporated.
