Clue in highway shootings
The week's news at a glance.
Columbus, Ohio
Police this week got what could be their first clear description of the sniper who has been stalking highways outside Columbus, Ohio. A van and a Mercedes sedan were hit by gunfire within minutes of each other a mile apart on Interstate 71. Both were hit in the hood, and no one was hurt. The driver of the Mercedes, Douglas Berry, said he saw a white man in his 30s or 40s driving a black sports car onto a highway overpass. “I saw him park his car, get out of it, walk to the rail, and take his shot,” said Berry, 51. Twenty-one other vehicles have been shot since May; one woman has been killed. Police said the recent shootings appeared to be linked to the others, but it was too soon to be sure.
