Temple attacked
The week's news at a glance.
Gandhinagar, India
Muslim terrorists stormed a Hindu temple, killing at least 30 men, women, and children, and wounding more than 70 in a wild shooting spree. The attack was the worst episode of ethnic violence in the state of Gujarat since February and March, when a Muslim mob slaughtered 59 Hindus, and 1,000 Muslims were killed in revenge. Indian commandos exchanged fire with the unidentified gunmen, who held at least 25 hostages in the temple after blasting their way in with AK-47s and grenades. Indian Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani said that “enemies of the country”—implying Pakistan—staged the attack to disrupt peaceful elections taking place in the disputed region of Kashmir.
