From the magazine
Russell Byars of Franklin, Pa., has broken the world record for stone skipping. On July 19, he staked out a position at the intersection of the Allegheny River and French Creek and, on his very first try, skipped a stone 51 times across the calm water. Videographers were on hand to capture the feat; last week, after analyzing the film, Guinness World Records announced that Byars had indeed shattered the previous record of 40 skips, set in 2002. Byars is no novice; he’s been competing in skipping contests for years. Asked about his secret, he replied, “You know what, I really don’t know.”
