Early Sunday morning, a Metro-North passenger train headed for Grand Central Station derailed in the Bronx, sending four cars careening off the tracks. Four people died and at least 60 more were injured, a dozen critically. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash, but early indications suggest speed was a factor.
The scene takes on a surreal quality when viewed from above. Instead of hugging the hairpin curve, the serpentine train takes a sharp right turn and inches toward the Hudson River, stopping just at the bank. Like a broken limb, the train lies jagged and unnaturally twisted along the shore.
