Thousands of people marched through New Zealand's capital Wellington this week in protest at a proposed bill that could redefine the founding treaty between British colonists and the native Māori people.

More than 40,000 people took part on the final day of a peaceful walking protest called a "hīkoi". It was one of the country's biggest-ever demonstrations, said the BBC.

Why are they protesting?
The protests centre around mooted changes to the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, which "enshrines principles of co-governance between Indigenous and non-Indigenous New Zealanders", said CNN.

The Treaty Principles bill put forward doesn't propose any changes to the text of the treaty, but it recommends making some of its principles law and applicable to all New Zealanders. Supporters of the bill claim the treaty has created racial divisions; opponents say the bill would undermine Māori rights.

What does the bill want to do?
The indefinite nature of the treaty has led to New Zealand governments over many decades attempting to address the disenfranchisement and injustices of the Māori. There have been "billions of dollars in settlements" for breaches of the treaty, including "widespread expropriation of Māori land and natural resources", said The Independent.

The bill, put forward by the leader of the ACT party, David Seymour, aims to set some of the treaty's principles in law to avoid them being interpreted in "an ad hoc manner without input from New Zealanders".

What next?
Even before the hīkoi this week, parliament was interrupted by politicians opposing the bill performing a haka, a ceremonial chant. It was started by MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke of the Te Pāti Māori (the Māori party), who ripped up a copy of the bill during the haka.

Despite being unlikely to make it into law, the bill has become a "flashpoint on race relations" in New Zealand, said The Independent. The country has often been considered a "world leader when it comes to supporting Indigenous rights", said the BBC, but concerns over the treatment of Indigenous people have risen under the country's new governing coalition, which could instil more regressive policies than have been seen in recent decades.

Jaguar’s ultra-modern, electric-only and uncharacteristically offbeat rebrand has so far proved unconvincing and, for many, confusing.

"The luxury car brand has conveyed an innate sense of style and class through its century-long existence," said Alexander Larman in The Spectator. Now, commentators and car aficionados worry that its new look – which features an updated logo, a line of electric cars and a puzzling advert – will "torpedo their hard-won reputation".

'Do you sell cars?'
Car Dealer’s James Baggott wrote about "quite possibly the most bizarre automotive media launch I've ever attended". This week's event was, he said, "like a hallucinogenic sci-fi movie where the presenters were only allowed to speak in marketing babble".

Along with the futuristic ad (which does not feature any vehicles), the company unveiled updated logos and planned changes to the Jaguar dealership experience. The well-known Jaguar logo, dubbed the "growler", will be replaced by an understated, brass-embossed design.

The rebrand has baffled fans and experts, and has prompted replies from the likes of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. "Do you sell cars?" Musk said, in a reply to Jaguar's post on X. The car company responded, inviting Musk for "a cuppa in Miami" at the official launch of its "design concept" in early December.

A 'firebreak' between old and new
Earlier this year, Jaguar decided to stop selling older, petrol-fuelled models in anticipation of its completely new line-up of all-electric vehicles. This reset of the brand is designed "to give customers and its dealers a ‘firebreak’ between old and new", said Baggott but it appears "the car maker has put everything on black and crossed its fingers".

Gerry McGovern, chief creative officer of parent company Jaguar Land Rover, spoke at the event. "Calling it a 'complete reset', McGovern at one point told journalists that his team had 'not been sniffing the white stuff – this is real'," said Baggott.

Critics still aren't sure though. "Perhaps the old associations and traditions associated with the brand are anachronistic now, and it did need a reinvention of some kind," said Larman in The Spectator. "But this brash, frenetic and thoroughly misguided farrago feels as crass and as disrespectful as if someone had spray-painted graffiti all over the Cenotaph."

"There's no 'practically' about it, 'Mary Poppins' at the Bristol Hippodrome is completely and utterly perfect," said Ellie Kendall on Bristol Live. Two decades since its worldwide debut on "this very stage", Cameron Mackintosh's musical adaptation of P.L. Travers' book and the 1964 Disney film is back.

There's plenty that is "Christmas-pertinent" about the production, said Dominic Cavendish in The Telegraph. This is a "fable about a careworn city banker who redemptively discovers the value of putting humanity first and remembers that the most precious commodity is his family". But the show also has a "year-round medicinal benefit", with its "irresistible" invitation to "throw cares aside and reclaim your inner child".

Bob Crowley's sets are "beautiful to behold" – expect "smoking chimneys, picture-book flourishes and splashes of hallucinogenic colour". And while it's a "slightly different beast" from the film, the production has the added benefit of providing "real-time thrills".

It's a "humdinger of a show", said Kris Hallett on What's On Stage. "Magic" pours through "every well-choreographed frame", proving the books are truly "timeless". The talented creative team delivers the "spectacle" the audience will expect with numbers like "Step In Time", a "seven-minute tap tour de force that builds up to a mammoth crescendo", and the "technicolour jamboree of 'Jolly Holiday'".

Remarkably, the stage adaptation takes the classic Disney film and "improves upon it", developing the characters in a way the movie wasn't able to. "'Mary Poppins' may bring a spoonful of sugar to the Banks household, but there are real-life traumas to tackle." The production was under enormous pressure to "match what is for most people a huge part of their childhood". Arguably, this latest iteration of "Mary Poppins" will be remembered as the "finest work any of them has produced".
