The Democrats fared better than had been expected in this week’s US midterm elections as the so-called “red wave” failed to materialise.
The Republicans weren’t able to sweep the polls as had been predicted, with President Joe Biden’s party securing key victories and maintaining house seats in key battleground states including Ohio, Virginia and Michigan.
In one of the biggest boosts for the Democrats, John Fetterman flipped Pennsylvania from red to blue in the state's senate election, defeating Mehmet Oz in what was a major blow for Donald Trump.

The former president had backed Oz and a number of other high-profile candidates ahead of a potential run at the White House in 2024, but the night brought defeat for many of them.
Speculation that Ron DeSantis could run against Trump as the next Republican presidential candidate mounted after the governor of Florida secured a sizeable election victory, winning over counties that had previously reliably voted Democrat.
Tension between the two men grew as voters headed to the polls, with Trump warning DeSantis that he could “hurt him very badly” in a battle for the White House. “I know more about him than anybody,” said the former president of the governor, “other than, perhaps, his wife.”
