NYPD makes its own safety a top priority

In the wake of two targeted police killings in New York City this past week, police officials have urged officers to prioritize safety. While the NYPD Commissioner, William J. Bratton, spoke of officers both keeping citizens and themselves safe, the president of the police lieutenant's union, Lou Turco, took a more police-centric perspective. "Your main job is to ensure the safety of yourselves and your officers," he said.

Another union statement said the NYPD's emphasis on officer safety should even take precedence over making arrests.
