Ron Ingraham's family was planning his funeral when he was found early Tuesday after 12 days lost at sea.

The search for the 67-year-old Hawaiian was called off more than a week ago, after the Coast Guard and Navy flew 59 missions covering 12,000 square miles and couldn't find him, the Los Angeles Times reports. Ingraham went missing Thanksgiving Day; he sent two mayday calls saying his boat, Malia, was taking on water and in danger of sinking, and although the Coast Guard responded within an hour Ingraham and the boat were nowhere to be found.

On Tuesday, an eight second mayday call from 64 miles south of Honolulu was picked up, and a nearby U.S. guided-missile destroyer quickly responded to find a very weak, dehydrated, and hungry Ingraham, who had survived his ordeal by eating raw fish. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused Malia's problems.
