At least 70 Ethiopian migrants drowned off the coast of Yemen Saturday when their boat sank near the al-Mahka port, authorities said.

High winds caused rough seas, and the boat was not in proper condition, Reuters reports. Smugglers are using unsafe boats to bring thousands of migrants to Yemen each year, as the country is considered a gateway to wealthier places like Oman and Saudi Arabia. In March, at least 42 drowned in a similar accident off the southern coast of Yemen.
