Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent an unplanned surgery Wednesday morning to have a stent placed in her right coronary artery.

The 81-year-old Ginsburg felt discomfort after working out Tuesday, and doctors subsequently discovered a blockage in her heart. The surgery went smoothly, and Ginsburg is expected to be released from the hospital within 48 hours.

Ginsburg's age and health have been subjects of concern for some on the left who think the liberal justice should retire before Obama's term is up so the president can appoint a progressive successor.
