Israel and Hamas have resumed fighting

A 72-hour cease-fire between Israel and Hamas expired today, and the two sides swiftly resumed the deadly conflict that has killed more than 1,800 Palestinians and dozens of Israelis over the past month.
The cease-fire appears to have been broken first by Palestinian militants in Gaza, who began launching rockets into Israel a couple of hours before the truce officially ended. Israel retaliated, killing five people, including a 10-year-old child.
It remains unclear whether the resumption of hostilities will scuttle ongoing, indirect talks between Israel and Hamas in Cairo. In lieu of a broader agreement, U.S. and United Nations officials are at the very least hoping for an extension of the cease-fire.
