Universal gives Guillermo Del Toro the go-ahead on Pacific Rim sequel
Get ready for more Kaijus and Jaegers, and, okay, maybe a few humans, too.
Universal announced this week that Guillermo del Toro has a green light for Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to last summer's blockbuster-in-theory, reports the Los Angeles Times. The original 3-D film released by Warner Bros. only managed a $411 million global haul, considered modest on a nearly $200 million production budget. Universal will try to circumvent the summer-blockbuster saturation by releasing the followup in April of 2017, instead.
Del Toro had said several weeks earlier that he and screenwriter Zak Penn (The Avengers) were working on a sequel. Hey, as far as summer "humans versus creatures threatening extinction" movies go, I'm happy to wait a year or two for Del Toro's followup than cave and go see, say, the latest Transformers flick.
