The Daily Show breaks in new cast member Michael Che with a Syria correspondent-off

Jon Stewart started out Wednesday night's Daily Show by talking democracy — in Egypt, Iowa, and then Syria. There are some good jokes, but the main event was the unveiling of a new correspondent, Michael Che. Che's first assignment is a live report from "Aleppo," and he nailed it — sort of. The studio audience clearly didn't know what to make of Che's straight news analysis, but Aasif Mandvi did: He was outraged that Stewart gave a "Muslim story" to another cast member (though Mandvi has decamped for HBO). The only way to solve this was a battle of the correspondents. It's an interesting introduction to Che. I, for one, look forward to seeing where this is headed. --Peter Weber
