Veteran photographer Anja Niedringhaus, 48, was fatally shot Friday, reportedly by an Afghan police officer in Kabul. Canadian reporter Kathy Gannon, who was traveling with her, was wounded and is in stable condition. The two journalists were covering the Afghan election and were traveling in a convoy when, according to the AP report, the officer walked up to the car, yelled "Allah Akbar" — God is Great — and opened fire on them in the back seat with his AK-47.
Niedringhaus had spent 20 years covering conflict zones from Kuwait to the West Bank. In 2005 she earned a Pulitzer Prize as part of a team of AP photographers covering the Iraq War.
"Anja was a vibrant, dynamic journalist well-loved for her insightful photographs, her warm heart, and joy for life," AP Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll said in a statement. "We are heartbroken at her loss."
