Newtown, Connecticut, is building a memorial to the 26 victims of the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The victims' families will be involved in shaping the monument, and the town held a public forum on Tuesday to discuss the memorial. NBC Connecticut reports that most Newtown residents want the memorial to be "a community gathering place," such as a memorial park with 26 trees.

Newtown's next public forum about the memorial will be on Jan. 29.
