Report: Michael Bloomberg tried to buy The New York Times

There's been speculation about former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's desire to buy The New York Times for years, but New York magazine reports that Bloomberg did, at one point, actually try to buy the Grey Lady.
A source with "direct knowledge of the conversation" told New York that in 2013, Bloomberg told Times chairman and publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. that he wanted to buy the Times. Sulzberger responded was that the paper "was not for sale."
Even so, New York's Gabriel Sherman is sure to point out that this is all speculation:

Given the fact that both sides vehemently deny that there have been recent conversations (Sulzberger "can't remember the last time he spoke with Bloomberg," said a spokesperson), this may very well be wishful — or apprehensive — thinking being played out in the echo chamber of media gossip.
