Obama asks Congress for war authorization to fight ISIS

President Obama on Wednesday sent to Congress a bill requesting approval of a three-year war resolution to combat ISIS.

"If left unchecked, ISIL will pose a threat beyond the Middle East, including to the United States homeland," Obama wrote to lawmakers.

Obama insisted that the authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) would not result in a long-term operation like those in Afghanistan or Iraq, though in a significant shift from past policy it could result in ground operations against the militant group. Congress last approved an AUMF in 2002 ahead of the war in Iraq.
